Question or Problem: Explanation about the 3 cash handling modes.
There are 2 possibilities for servers while taking cash payments. They can put the cash in the cash drawer, or they can keep it on them (which is known as a server bank - THIS IS IMPORTANT) Cash Handling modes are restrictions the system puts in place based on how the customer wants to handle their cash, every store is different and the most important question to ask a customer is how they currently/want to handle cash at the store.
This is the default cash handling mode for stores. What this mode does is forces servers to cash in on a cash drawer if there is a cash drawer on the terminal the server is trying to take the payment on. If there is a cash drawer, the system will prompt and force the user to cash themselves into the cash drawer and will ASSUME the server is putting the money inside of the cash drawer. If there is no cash drawer, the system will not prompt the server to cash in (since there is nothing to cash into) and will assume the server is keeping the cash on them (server bank).
On this mode, the system will only allow servers to take cash payments on a terminal with a cash drawer. A good visual for this is stores like First Watch or Steak n Shake where you take your receipt and pay up front. If a server attempts to take a cash payment the system will force the user to cash in to the cash drawer and will assume they are putting the money into the cash drawer. There is no server bank ever on this Cash Handling mode. If a server attempts to take a payment on a cash drawer without a cash drawer it will prompt them to take the payment on a terminal with a cash drawer.
This is a Cash Handling mode we usually do not recommend unless the customer is 100% informed of the potential consequences. This mode allows servers to take cash payments on terminals with a cash drawer without cashing into it, as well as taking cash payments on a terminal without a cash drawer. If the server is not cashed in to the cash drawer where they are taking the cash payment the system will assume they are keeping it in their server bank. If they manually cash in to a cash drawer on the terminal, it will assume they are putting the cash into the cash drawer. With this mode the system removes all restrictions and everything is up to the customer. Inform the customer the system will never prompt them to cash into the cash drawer, as well as cashing in the cash drawer itself. If someone forgets to do so, the system will assume the money is being kept in their server bank.
